stufenweise veränderlicher elektrischer Widerstand für genaueste Messungen.

Rheostat
 
[zu griechisch statós »gestellt«, »stehend«] der, -(e)s und -en/-e(n), Messtechnik: veränderbarer Präzisionswiderstand, der durch Drehschalter oder Stöpsel (zum Teil mit vergoldeten Kontaktflächen) eingestellt und für genaueste Messungen, z. B. für Eichzwecke, eingesetzt wird. Er besteht aus Sätzen von hochgenauen Einzelwiderständen (10-2 Ω bis 105 Ω), die in einem Gehäuse angeordnet sind. Die Übergangswiderstände der Kontakte betragen nur etwa 10-4 Ω.
